World’s First Defamation Suit against an AI(ChatGPT)

Australian Hepburn Shire Mayor, Brian Hood is determined to sue OpenAI, the company that built ChatGPT an AI-based search engine on charges of defamation for a falsified claim made by the AI about the said Mayor.

ChatGPT is a text-based Q&A model search engine, it generates meaningful answers to its users’ questions using artificial intelligence technology.

Last year Hood was informed that ChatGPT had falsely mentioned him as a convict of the bribery scandal at Australia’s Reserve Bank( RBA), its subsidiary Note Printing Australia was found guilty in 2011 and multiple officials were sentenced. Hood was never found guilty rather he was one of the people who brought this incident to light, he was the hero who was falsely represented as a culprit by the AI.

Hood’s lawyer had sent a legal notice to OpenAI on March 21, asking them to fix the errors about their client or they will be charging them with a defamation suit. The San Fransisco-based company had not yet responded to the letter, and Microsoft Corp. which had recently integrated ChatGPT with its search engine was also not available.

Thus, we might see a possible suit of defamation on an AI for the very first time.
