A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court challenging the ongoing internet ban in Manipur, which has been in place since May 3 following violence in the state. The petitioners, lawyer Chongtham Victor Singh and businessman Mayengbam James argue that despite de-escalating, the government has repeatedly imposed state-wide internet shutdowns. The plea highlights the adverse impact on residents who cannot communicate with loved ones or colleagues, disrupting personal, professional, and social relationships. Access to essential services such as education, banking, and healthcare has also been severely hindered.

The petition emphasizes that the internet ban infringes the fundamental rights and is disproportionate to the situation. It asserts that the orders fail to cite reasons within the constitutional framework and violate telecommunications suspension rules. The plea requests the restoration of internet services in all districts and the publication of suspension orders and Review Committee findings. The petition was prepared by Adv.Natasha Maheshwari and filed by Adv.Shadan Farasat.

In conclusion, Adv.Chongtham Victor Singh and businessman Mayengbam James challenge the prolonged shutdown’s impact on communication and essential services. The plea highlights violations of fundamental rights, disproportionate measures, and lack of transparency. Urging the restoration of internet services and publication of suspension orders, advocates Natasha Maheshwari and Shadan Farasat seek relief for Manipur’s residents. The Supreme Court’s decision will determine the fate of digital freedom in the state.
