During his address at the 16th Ramnath Goenka awards event, the Chief Justice of India (CJI), who was also the chief guest, described responsible journalism as the driving force that propels democracy towards a brighter future.
On Wednesday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated that false information has the potential to generate conflicts among communities and thus endanger democratic values.
“Fake news can create tensions among communities and there is a need to bridge the gap between truth and the lie. Fake news has the capacity to disturb if not destroy democracy,” he said.
“Responsible journalism is the engine that drives democracy forward to a better tomorrow. In a digital age, it is more important than ever for journalists to be accurate, impartial, responsible, and fearless in their reporting,” he said.
During his speech, the Chief Justice of India also addressed various problems affecting the media. He expressed disapproval of the practice of media trials in criminal cases, asserting that the media often declares a defendant guilty before the courts do.
He stressed that when the press is hindered from performing its duties, the vitality of democracy is put at risk. He believed that the media must be allowed to operate freely, and that disapproval of a journalist’s tactics should not escalate to animosity or physical harm.
