“The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India issued a corrigendum on Monday, disclosing slight modifications to the composition of benches that will be handling cases during the upcoming summer vacation period, set to commence from Monday, May 22, until Sunday, July 2. The alterations primarily concern the internal ranking of benches in two specific time slots (May 22 – May 28 and June 26 – July 2), which are determined based on the seniority of the presiding judges.
Outlined below is the updated roster of vacation benches that will preside over matters during the summer break.
As previously announced, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, exercising his authority under the Supreme Court Rules of 2013, had declared that the apex court would be closed for the vacation, resuming its regular activities in the first week of July. It is worth noting that this year’s summer break is scheduled to be one week shorter than the seven-week recess observed in 2022.
A notification published on the official website of the Supreme Court contains the following statement:
“In pursuance of Rule 4 of Order II of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013, Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India has directed that the Supreme Court will be closed for the annual Summer Vacation from Monday, the 22nd May 2023 to Sunday, the 2nd July 2023 (both days inclusive) and will reopen on Monday, the 3rd July 2023.”
It is important to emphasize that throughout the summer vacation, the registry of the Supreme Court will remain open daily, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, facilitating the officers and staff in their administrative duties. However, for non-clerical ‘Group C’ personnel, working hours will be from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, excluding weekends. The registry will operate on Saturday, July 1, which marks the final Saturday before the Court resumes regular functioning. Additionally, the registry will remain closed on designated holidays.
