The group of appeals [Supriyo and anr v. Union of India] requesting the legal recognition of same-sex marriages will be heard by a Constitution bench of the Supreme Court under the leadership of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S. Ravindra Bhat, PS Narasimha, and Hima Kohli will also be on the bench.
The hearing in this case will start on Tuesday, April 18.

The Supreme Court received petitions from gay couples, but the Central government has opposed them.
The Central government claimed in an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court that having a sexual relationship with someone of the same sex and living together as partners are not comparable to the Indian concept of the family, which entails a biological man and woman and children born out of such wedlock.
Similar opinions have been expressed by the Islamic religious organization Jamiat-Ulama-I-Hind, which has stated that ideas like same-sex marriage come from western culture and should not be imposed on India. This is because western culture has radical atheistic worldviews.
However, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has backed the petitioners’ position and stated that same-sex couples must be granted adoption and succession rights.
