Surfing back into the history, in the year of 1990. When, Berlin wall had fallen, cold war was ending, the Russia and NATO signed a landmark pact, known as Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.
It states that Russia and NATO won’t build forces at each other’s border. It was important to prevent future potential conflicts between the cold war rivals, to some extent. But today, the situation is changed, Russia and NATO have scrapped this treaty.
NATO announces formal suspension of cold war-era security treaty, after Russia’s pullout. One widely circulated news channel reports – “It’s over! NATO and Russia pull out of decades old security treaty.”
US and NATO served notice that they will formally “suspend” participation in 1990 Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe. NATO argued that Russia’s withdrawal renders this treaty unsustainable.
This wasn’t sudden on Moscow’s side, Russia indicated its irresolute behaviour towards this treaty long ago. In 2007, Russia has “suspended” participation in this treaty. In 2015, Russia gave notice stating its intention to withdraw from the treaty. And, this week, Russia officially and fully withdrew from the treaty.
The Kremlin says, Russia suspended this treaty, citing NATO’s expansion too close to its borders. And this undermines post-cold war security.
Moscow blames US and NATO Allies expansion plan for treaty collapse. NATO condemns this alegation.
This is not the first treaty Moscow has withdrawn from and is unlikely to be the last. Last week, Russia has suspended its participation in Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
Tensions between Russia and the US are undermining key arms treaty, which were the sign of easing tensions, a sign of trust between the east and the west. But that no longer seems to be the case.
