Keywords: United Nations, UNSC, Reforms in UNSC
United Nations was formed on 24 October 1945. It is an intergovernmental body whose main work is to maintain peace. Its main aim is to punish the aggressor and provide aid to the victim country. UN is the successor of the League of Nations as the League of Nations failed to prevent the Second World War. The United Nations (UN) has six main organs. Five of them — the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, and the Secretariat. The sixth, the International Court of Justice, is located at The Hague in the Netherlands. At present, it has 193 countries and two observer members i.e., Vatican City and Palestine. It was formed with 50 countries including India. When it started functioning, it had 5 permanent and 6 non-permanent members in the Security Council.
Till now, there has been no change in the Security Council of the United Nations only non-permanent members increased to 10. It has been almost 80 years since its formation and there is no change in the Security Council. All five countries were given special power i.e., Veto( it’s a power which means no of any person in five will be no in any issue). These five countries- the USA, USSR (Now Russia), United Kingdom, France, and China uses veto power according to their interest. In April 2022, the General Assembly discussed the casting of vetoes and made them accountable for the veto.
Its main objective was to maintain peace, provide security, and promote the well-being of people. But, Wars between the states didn’t stop and the United Nations failed to maintain peace around the world. It is the Security Council which didn’t perform its duty towards the world. Cold War, the India-Pakistan War, India-China, etc. are the failures of the United Nations. Now, Russia-Ukraine War and Israel-Palestine War. Security Council now become the personal promotion of the agenda of five countries. At present in Israel-Hamas War, again these five countries are divided among themselves according to their interest. The USA, UK, and France came in support of Israel but Russia came in support of Hamas and China approached a neutral position. The UN just become a puppet of these five countries but the world is moving towards multilateralism.
Changes in the Security Council can bring peace to the world. There are four changes to be done in the UNSC i.e., (1) the expansion of the Security Council, (2) bringing more members into it, and (3) Veto power should be replaced with the majority vote (4) It must have an active Army. (1) The expansion of UNSC means the inclusion of African countries. (2) More Members means members should not be limited to five only but include India, Brazil-Argentina, and any three African Countries. (3) Veto power should be replaced by the majority vote of all the UNSC members, it must be democratically. (4) Active Army: The UN is called a Lion without teeth and claws. Without an active army, it wouldn’t be possible to bring peace between states.
