
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rightly identified deep fakes as a significant threat to India’s democratic and social fabric. Deepfakes which are currently used widely by youth it consist of edited AI generated videos and audios fabricating the real videos and audios which is influencing the identity of the real persons and are being currently being criticized by the public due to those widespread of such videos in which their identity is being stolen and is being misused.
In context of elections, deepfakes are being used to spread misinformation about a individual, which damages the reputation of candidates representing different political parties, and because of these they even stir up violence. As the elections are currently ongoing in India and during these events it has became difficult for the public or media to believe in which information about the individual or which to trust. These fake multimedias are decrading the potential of the elections and decline the integrity of the electoral process.
Deepfakes are not limited to scope of defaming the political bodies but also spreads hate speech widely which could be either to get personal gain, blackmail or financial fraud. The deepfake video of PM Narendra Modi doing which is currently been shared through many channels is a fake video in fact its Vikas Mahante who Acts and who also happens to look like PM Modi which causes confusion and is misleading to public.
To address such growing modern threat of deepffakes, India needs to take multiple approach to develop technologies that can detect deepfakes like a ai detect content on a plagiarism website which also includes to educate the public about the dangers and use of such tools and to go through the legal framework provided by t he government on using such ai generative software and the consequences of the misuse of ai. Media plays a crucial role for that the media should become the voice to public to properly educate them about the pros and cons on making of such memes which not only includes a The Prime Minister but also includes a common civilian too, so that the public wants be manipulated by such interactive media.
