The CPI(M) filed a suit with the Calcutta High Court alleging that a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate had submitted his candidature while away from home for the Bengal Panchayat elections. Mohinuddin Gazi allegedly submitted his application from Saudi Arabia when he was there doing the Haj, according to the petitioner. The Central Bureau of Investigation has been directed to look into claims that officials involved in the impending Panchayat elections tampered with nomination documents, which led to the filing of the petition.
The CPI(M) claims that Gazi, a resident of Minakhan in Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, submitted his nomination for the local-body elections while being abroad. This is troubling since the candidate must formally sign the nomination papers at the filing facility. Considering that Gazi left India before the nomination process started on June 8, the CPI(M) called for an investigation. He would be unable to sign the form at the appropriate office as necessary, let alone file the nomination or even be aware that nominations were being filed.
The petitioners further alleged collusion in this case between the State Election Commission (SEC), the governing party, and government representatives like the Block Development Officer (BDO) and the Panchayat poll returning officers. The acts of the officers were questioned by Justice Amrita Sinha of the Calcutta High Court, who emphasised the submission of nominations by candidates who were not present in person.
The defence attorney for the prisoner claimed that because no claims of signature forgery had been made and examined, the officer had assumed the validity of the nomination. India Today TV made an
attempt to get in touch with Gazi’s family for a response but got no answer. Locals in Minakhan acknowledged that Gazi has lived there for more than ten years and that he travelled for the Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia while aware that he was due to submit his nomination for the Panchayat elections.
