
The retirements of Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice M.R.Shah reduced the strength of the supreme court to 32. This includes the CJI and 33 other judges. Four more judges are set to retire in the coming months creating additional vacancies. The supreme court is back to its original strength after the appointment of Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Senior Advocate KV Viswanathan. Article 124 of the constitution states that each judges of the supreme court shall be appointed by the president of India by warrant under his hand and with the consultation with such of the judges of the high court in the states as the president may deem to be necessary. In the case of the appointment of any judge other than the CJI ,the CJI should be consulted.
K.V.Vishwanathan is in line to become the CJI of India from August 12, 2030, to May 25th, 2031.He is the tenth lawyer who has been directly appointed from the bar to the supreme court bench. Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra has been appointed as the chief justice of Chhattisgarh High court on 13th October 2021. Justice Mishra has accrued great experience in diverse fields of law. The resolution stated that Justice Mishra is a judge with integrity and his appointment will provide a valuable addition in terms of his knowledge and experience.
