While on an official trip to Singapore, Dr. DY Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, held a meeting with Sundaresh Menon, Chief Justice of Singapore. This diplomatic exchange resulted in two significant memorandum of understanding (MoUs), solidifying cooperation between the judicial systems of both nations.

The first MoU, signed between the Supreme Court of India and the Supreme Court of Singapore, focuses on enhancing judicial cooperation. This development is the culmination of Chief Justice Menon’s earlier visit to India, where he observed the proceedings of Court I of the Indian Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. This visit coincided with the Indian Supreme Court’s inaugural Foundation Day celebration on February 4, 2023. During the event, Justice Menon delivered a lecture on the “Role of judiciary in a changing world,” acknowledging the Indian Supreme Court’s extraordinary workload and the tireless efforts of its justices.

Moreover, the second MoU was inked between the National Judicial Academy of India and the Singapore Judicial College of the Supreme Court, with a focus on advancing judicial education and research. Both Chief Justices, Dr. DY Chandrachud and Sundaresh Menon, were present to witness this historic agreement.

Justice Sundaresh Menon, the first Singapore-born Chief Justice of Singapore, has served in this esteemed position since 2012 and shares an alma mater with CJI DY Chandrachud, having obtained his Master of Laws from Harvard Law School.

In a reciprocal gesture, Justice Menon’s previous visit to India saw him participating in the 73rd anniversary celebration of the Indian Supreme Court’s establishment, where he was the chief guest. This latest exchange of agreements between India and Singapore marks a significant step forward in fostering stronger ties and mutual cooperation in the field of law and justice between the two nations.
