Dinganglung Gangmei, the chairman of the Hills Area committee [HAC] of the Manipur legislative assembly approached the supreme court challenging the Manipur high court related to the scheduled tribe status for the Meitei community. The Meitei people are also called as Manipuri people, a predominant ethnic group of Manipur of Northeast India. Meitei language is one of the 22 official languages of India. The petitioner in this case argues that the direction towards the state government recommending a scheduled tribe for the scheduled tribe list falls solely within the state government’s jurisdiction and not the High court.
He claimed that this order has raised tension between both the communities and violent clashes erupted across the state. 19 tribals were killed, internet has been completely shut down and more people are at the risk of losing their lives. The petitioner also argued that the inclusion of this tribal group in the list had been pending for 10 years. The most important part of the petition is that the Meite tribe has not been recognized as a tribe.

There was no recommendation of the state government pending before the central government as per the petition. In the absence of satisfaction on the part of state and without completing the constitutional requirements to include the tribe in the tribes list, the state is not bound to act on frivolous representations at all.
