Figures showing attacks on Christians Incorrect: Central government tells SC in a plea seeking to stop an attack against Christian priests and institutions:

In case:  Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado And Ors. UOI and Ors.

In the present case, the petitioners are Dr. Peter Machado who is an Archbishop of the Banglore  Diocese, National Solidarity Forum, and Evangelica Fellowship of India.

This plea is for looking for directions to stop alleged attacks against Christian communities and institutions across the country. On 13th April, the Central Government argued before SC that as per collated data from States, the figures of the attack were also incorrect.

In this case, the petitioner filed a PIL against “the sinister phenomena of violence” and targeted “hate speech” against the congregation of the country by vigilante groups and members of right-wing institutions. They said that such kind of violence increasing owing to the failure of the State Machinery to prevent its nationals.

The petitioner argued that there is negligence by the Central Government of India State Government of India and other State Machineries in taking Instant and Important action against those who have caused extensive violence and discriminatory speech against the congregation including attacks at their church and other organizations run by them.

A counter-affidavit has been filed by the Union of Governments stating the claim of “Christian persecution” in India is not true and alleged that the petitioner has relied upon certain one-sided reports.

It is further stated by the Union Government that petitioners have shown certain cases which arise out of personal disputes as regional attacks.

The present case was argued before CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice P.S Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala.

On 13th April 2023, the Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, in favor of the Central Government said that the Apex Court had taken note of f the matter on basis of the figure provided by the Petitioner. However, the figures were incorrect.

He said “The petitioner claimed that there are some  500 incidents where Christians were attacked. We sent everything to the state government. We collated all information we got first let’s see Bihar. The total number which the petitioner gave are internal fights between neighbors one of which happens to be Christian – this they have resolved. The figure given by them, which persuaded your lordships, was incorrect.”
