China and Pakistan are currently deep into their third Sea Guardian-3 naval exercise in the northern Arabian Sea, running from November 11 to 17. Excitingly, they’re not just practicing; they’re teaming up for their first-ever joint maritime patrol.
This naval collaboration is happening right after India and the U.S. had a 2+2 Ministerial dialogue, putting a spotlight on maritime security in the Indo-Pacific. India also shared its decision to become a full member of the U.S.-led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), of which Pakistan is also a member already.
Interestingly, the joint naval exercise also coincides with Russia and Myanmar conducting their first naval exercise in the Andaman Sea, showcasing the dynamic geopolitical activities in the region.
This collaboration involves some serious naval firepower. China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy has brought in a Type-093 Song class submarine, the guided-missile destroyer Zibo, and frigates Jingzhou and Linyi. They’ve also got two helicopters and the supply ship Qiandaohu. On Pakistan’s side, they’ve got nine vessels, three helicopters, four fighter jets, and a maritime patrol aircraft actively taking part.
According to the official Chinese Army report, not only will they patrol together, but they’re also swapping observers. Chinese observers are teaming up with a Pakistani anti-submarine patrol aircraft.
In a nutshell, China and Pakistan are strengthening their maritime ties amidst regional conversations about security and collaboration.
