They now have access to valuable information, such as how to obtain a free phone or access free groceries at charity food banks. However, in recent weeks, some international students who have lined up for free groceries have not only left empty-handed but have also received notices from their colleges stating that these food banks are meant for the most vulnerable members of society.
• According to a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the London Food Bank in Ontario observed a significant rise in the number of students from Fanshawe College seeking assistance. Co-executive director Glen Pearson stated that the numbers started to increase rapidly, prompting the staff to investigate the cause behind it. It was discovered that a Malayalam video had misled many students into believing that they could save money by Opting to visit a food bank rather than making purchases at Walmart.
• The college was immediately contacted by the food bank, which then proceeded to send a notification to all students regarding the current situation.
• Although social media content may have contributed to an increase in the number of students seeking assistance from food banks, the primary concern is the rising cost of living in Canada. The combination of high unemployment rates and exorbitant rental prices has placed a significant strain on international students, who often rely on loans to finance their education in Canada. As a result, many of them have been forced to turn to food banks for essential support.
