• In Brampton, Ontario, a food bank that serves a significant number of international students  took the decision to prohibit their access due to a notable increase in their attendance.

• The process of settling in Canada is no longer as daunting for many desi newcomers, thanks to  the influence of YouTube and Instagram. They now have access to valuable information, such  as how to obtain a free phone or access free groceries at charity food banks. However, in  recent weeks, some international students who have lined up for free groceries have not only  left empty-handed but have also received notices from their colleges stating that these food  banks are meant for the most vulnerable members of society.

• According to a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the London Food Bank  in Ontario observed a significant rise in the number of students from Fanshawe College  seeking assistance. Co-executive director Glen Pearson stated that the numbers started to  increase rapidly, prompting the staff to investigate the cause behind it. It was discovered that a  Malayalam video had misled many students into believing that they could save money by  Opting to visit a food bank rather than making purchases at Walmart.

• The college was immediately contacted by the food bank, which then proceeded to send a  notification to all students regarding the current situation.

• Although social media content may have contributed to an increase in the number of students  seeking assistance from food banks, the primary concern is the rising cost of living in Canada.  The combination of high unemployment rates and exorbitant rental prices has placed a  significant strain on international students, who often rely on loans to finance their education  in Canada. As a result, many of them have been forced to turn to food banks for essential  support.
