The madras high court recently held that caste will have no role to play in the appointement of archaka (temple priest )if the person so selected to the post was well versed ,properly trained and fully qualified to perform pujas and other rituals as per the requirement of the temple concerned .
The court also referred the case of seshammal and others versus state of tamil nadu ,where it was held that the appointement of an archaka to a temple would be a secular function ,only the performance of religious service by those priest would be an integral part of the religion.
The court further relied on the case adithayan v. Travancore devaswom board ,in which the customary claim for performance of rituals only by Brahmins ,in particular ,was negatived.
