Case involving disproportionate assets: directive given to restore seized funds to IUML leader

Keyword : VACB, RTA

In a case involving the accumulation of excessive wealth, the Kozhikode vigilance court has ordered the return of ₹47.35 lakh that was taken from Indian Union Muslim League leader K.M. Shaji by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB).

According to the ruling made by Special Judge T. Madhusoodanan and the Enquiry Commissioner, he will receive the money as a Treasury cheque after providing a bank guarantee and filling out a bond for the full amount.

The money was retrieved from his Kannur home on April 12, 2021, as a result of an investigation into him in a case involving excessive assets. The VACB study states that there were differences between the amount of money Mr. Shaji spent between 2011 and 2020 and the costs he reported in his election candidature papers. The primary reason the VACB decided to move forward with the case was a 166% increase in Mr. Shaji’s income compared to the information he provided in the affidavit.

In the meantime, Mr. Shaji maintained that the prosecution brought against him was intended to put an end to his political career and was the product of a political resentment. In addition, he had stated that there was official proof supporting his assertion that the money that had been confiscated was combined from party employees to cover election-related costs.

Additionally, the VACB took action to thwart Mr. Shaji’s attempt to reclaim the money that had been seized. The investigative team claims that their purpose was to undermine the current investigation. Additionally, it had requested that the revenue Tax agency thoroughly investigate Mr. Shaji’s revenue sources in a report that was turned in.
