Advocate Vrinda Grover, a renowned legal professional, has been appointed as a member of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine by the President of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Ambassador Vaclav Balek (Czechia)

In a press release, the Council highlighted Grover’s extensive experience of more than 34 years in constitutional law, criminal law and human rights. Grover’s legal expertise extends to representing clients in landmark cases before India’s Trial Courts, High Courts, Supreme Court, Commissions of Inquiry, and quasi-judicial bodies.[1]

Grover has legally represented victims and survivors of sexual violence, communal massacres, custodial killings and death row prisoners.

The three-person Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine was constituted by the UN Human Rights Council on March 4, 2022, with a mandate to investigate all alleged violations and abuses of human rights, violations of international humanitarian law and related crimes in the context of aggression against Ukraine by Russia.[2]

In April, the Council extended the mandate of the Commission for an additional year. Grover will join Eric Mose from Norway and Pablo de Greiff from Colombia, who have served as Chair and Commissioner since March 2022.

The Commission is scheduled to provide an oral update to the UNHRC during its 54th session in September and subsequently submit a comprehensive report to the General Assembly during its 78th session in October 2023. A final comprehensive report is expected to be presented at its 55th session in March next year.
