Keywords: Justice KM Joseph, SCBA, democracy

On his last day as a judge, Supreme Court Justice KM Joseph argued that lawyers should be at the forefront to fight against forces which seek to undermine India’s Constitution. Justice Joseph’s retirement is scheduled for June 16, but Friday marked his final working day due to the beginning of the Supreme Court’s summer break starting tomorrow.

Justice Joseph recognized the significant talent within the Indian legal community and encouraged members of the bar to take a leading role in combating any forces that threaten the constitutional way of life[1]. Justice Joseph spoke at a farewell event arranged by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to honor him, along with Justices Ajay Rastogi and V Ramasubramanian, who will also retire during the Court’s summer break[2].

Nevertheless, he commended the judges for their commitment to filtering out cases that are not worthy of attention and acknowledged the crucial contribution of the bar in supporting the judges. He emphasized the challenge that democratic nations encounter in the form of descending into chaos or deviating from the principles of democracy. For this purpose, he called upon the bar to be vigilant and take responsibility for ensuring that democracy is kept alive from generation to generation.
