The Supreme Court observed that Gautam Navlakha who is facing charges under UAPA in relation with Bhima Koregaon Case, 2018 cannot escape from his responsibility of paying the expenses for his house arrest. This facility was provided to him at his own request.

It was observed that if he has asked for a house arrest then he cannot escape from his liability to pay the expenses as the order was passed on his assurance to pay for the security.

The learned counsel representing Navlakha assured to pay the expenses but contested the figures.

The bench asked the parties for cooperation. He was asked to pay the expenses otherwise it will only continue to increase. One week time was given to both the parties to settle it down, deferring the matter to April 23.

Gautam Navlakha is a human rights activist and also a former secretary of the People’s Union for Democratic Rights. He was arrested in August 2018 and kept under house arrest. Further in April, 2020 he was sent to a judicial custody in Taloja Central Prison. Later due to his advanced age his plea regarding house arrest was approved.
