On Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of KV Viswanathan, a Senior Advocate, as a Supreme Court judge. While making the recommendation, the collegium comprising Justices SK Kaul, KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and Sanjiv Khanna, and headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, noted that there was only one member from the bar who was directly appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has a sanctioned number of thirty four judges, and it is currently functioning with thirty two. In addition, by the second week in July there will be four additional vacancies and the working force of judges will rise to twenty eight[1].  The Collegium considers that, by virtue of his distinguished association with the legal fraternity, Viswanathan’s appointment shall strengthen the representation of the bar in the Supreme Court’s composition.

Upon receiving clearance from the Central government, Viswanathan will become the tenth lawyer to be directly appointed from the Bar to the Supreme Court, joining the list of appointed lawyers.

Judges SM Sikri, Kuldip Singh, SC Roy, Sandhya Hegde, U Lalit, Rohinton Nariman, L Nageswara Rao, PS Narasimha and Indu Malhotra have also been appointed directly from the Bar[2].
