The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has made an announcement on Tuesday that it has initiated a criminal probe on the Ontario government’s aim to partly develop the “Greenbelt,” a sizable portion of land under protection in the south province.

Though Canada’s federal police department (RCMP) refused to comment on the particulars of the investigation, it did state that a Sensitive and Internal Investigations (SII) branch is leading the investigation. Units of the SII look into matters related to political crimes and corruption. It was stated that the government would reserve any further information regarding the nature of the investigation in order to achieve a just and proper result.

According to the RCMP’s website, its critical and international investigations team focuses on delicate, high-risk cases that pose a significant risk to the country’s economic, political, and societal credibility both domestically and abroad. The unit conducts investigations political in nature into claims of corruption cases, deception, financial fraud, and violations of trust against the elected politicians.

The criminal investigation follows after the removal of property by the province from the Greenbelt area the previous year which was part of a bigger drive to build 1.5 million homes by the year 2031.

The Ontario government’s plan to open Greenbelt’s land area of nearly 3,000 hectares, a tract of land that is highly protected and which encircles the Greater Toronto region and spans from Niagara Falls to Peterborough, has been the subject of political controversy for some time now.
