The lawyers went to the courts in person and asked judges not to make unfavorable rulings against litigants. Additionally, they conducted a signature drive to promote the enactment of the Advocates Protection Act
Around 200 to 300 lawyers organized a peaceful demonstration on Friday to condemn the continuous attacks on attorneys, including the recent physical assault on Prithaviraj Zhala, a member of the Borivali Bar Association, who was allegedly attacked by an Assistant Police Inspector.
During the protest, the lawyers personally visited courts and requested judges not to make unfavorable rulings against litigants. In addition, they conducted a signature campaign both offline and online to support the Advocates Protection Act, which was signed by many lawyers.
Advocate Ravi Prakash Jadhav, the President of the All-India Federation of Advocates & Associations (AIFAA), led the demonstration, along with other lawyers including Shyam Pathak, Prakash Tiwari, Pal Kulkarni, Nilima Kasture, Geeta Anand, Singh, Jhaa, Bhosale, Asif Naqvi, Shaikh, Khan, Shahid Pathan, Ansari, as well as the secretary, vice president, and committee members of AIFAA.
The advocates assembled in a peaceful manner to express their worries and call for improved safety measures for themselves and fellow legal professionals. AIFFA released an urgent notice expressing their apprehension about the assault, and as members of the legal community, they believe it is their duty to condemn such violent acts and exhibit support for their colleague. To show solidarity with Jhala, AIFFA chose to protest against this violent act by refraining from work on March 17, 2023.
In addition, the notice conveyed that the association was happy to note that several other bar associations in Mumbai and Maharashtra had joined their cause and announced their endorsement of the protest. The City Civil Court Bar Association, Andheri Bar Association, Girgaum Bar Association, Kalyan Bar Association, Mazgaon Bar Association, Dadar Bar Association, Kurla Bar Association, Vikhroli Bar Association, Bandra Bar Association, Ulhasnagar Bar Association, Esplanade/Killa Court Bar Association, and others had stepped forward to support AIFAA’s endeavor to demand justice.
The association urged all advocates in Mumbai and Maharashtra to participate in the demonstrations and convey a powerful message that violence towards legal professionals will not be tolerated.
