The appeal was submitted to contest the ruling of a lone judge who had recently turned down the request, stating that there was insufficient evidence to support the director’s claims of nepotism.

Today, the Kerala High Court rejected an appeal from Malayalam film director Lijeesh MJ, who contested the Kerala State Film Awards 2022 announced by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on July 21.

Lijeesh MJ had filed the appeal challenging a single-judge’s decision to dismiss the case. The judge had ruled that the appeal lacked evidence to support claims of nepotism and bias.

On Wednesday, Chief Justice AJ Desai and Justice VG Arun upheld the dismissal based on similar grounds.

The panel of judges also pointed out that the petitioner’s film, ‘Aakaashathinu Thazhe,’ had not even been selected by the preliminary jury for the Kerala State Award.

In his appeal, Lijeesh MJ argued that the single judge had disregarded the facts, circumstances, and legal aspects of his case when dismissing his plea.

He asserted that his movie didn’t receive any awards due to partiality and favoritism by the jury.

The director also emphasized similar claims made by another filmmaker, Vinayan, who alleged having evidence against State Awards jury members, which could substantiate allegations of bias and nepotism on their part.

He had additionally requested the Court to instruct the State government and the Kerala State Police Chief to initiate an investigation and take appropriate measures against film director Ranjith Balakrishnan, who currently serves as the chairperson of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy.

The director was represented by advocates Prabhu KN, Manumon A, Rebin Vincent Gralan, and Dinesh G Warrier.
