The Bar Association of Gauhati High Court to protest the decision of shifting the court
The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has decided to protest against Assam government’s plan to shift the High Court of Guwahati to Rangmahal in North Guwahati from its current location. The sit-in protest is going to take place June 27. The distance between the current location and the proposed area is more than 25 kms and takes even more time to reach due to heavy traffic. The current building of the Court has been in work since 1951.
Himanta Biswa Sharma, the Chief Minister of Assam had announced the plan of a Judicial City in Guwahati with the Gauhati High Court, other judicial courts and a residential area for the Judges and other staff on April 14.
The main concern of the GHCBA is that of the distance of the area from that of the new one. Even though the works of constructing a bridge to minimize the distance between to two are in progress, it will still not be easy to get there on time due to traffic, the association says. They have also approached the President of India, Chief Justice, Union Law Minister, and the Chief Minister of Assam by writing a memorandum about the same.
Their main concern lies with the distance and that of the difficulties that will be faced by young and female lawyers to reach the new location.
