Thailand’s Cabinet has given the green light to amend the civil code, allowing same-sex marriage. Deputy government spokesperson Karom Polpornklang revealed that the proposed change replaces “men and women” and “husband and wife” with “individuals” and “marriage partners.” This modification aims to grant same-sex couples equal rights to their heterosexual counterparts. The amendment is set to be presented to Parliament next month, emphasizing the country’s commitment to recognizing diverse family structures. The government also plans to extend recognition to same-sex couples in pension fund laws, marking a significant step towards inclusivity.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced that the anticipated draft law allowing same-sex marriage is scheduled to be presented to Parliament on December 12. If approved by Parliament and endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Thailand would join Taiwan and Nepal as the third Asian country to embrace same-sex marriage.
Despite its reputation for LGBTQ+ friendliness, Thailand has faced challenges in passing a marriage equality law. Last year, Parliament discussed various amendments, considering both marriage equality and civil unions for same-sex couples. The newly elected government, in office since August, has reignited efforts to fulfil its campaign promise of a marriage equality bill, these is a potential milestone for inclusivity in the country.
