The Supreme Court will going to inaugurate a statue of Dr. BR Amedkar on Constitutional Day, November 26.
The statue is presently in the making in Manesar, Harayana. After completion of the statue, it will be transported to Supreme Court. The decision to form Dr. Amedkar’s statue originates from the continuous request of the group of lawyers who identify with the Amedkarite movement.
Last year, in December, the group had written a letter to CJI DY Chandrachud asking for the establishment of the statue of Dr. Amedkar on the lawn of the Supreme Court.
In September, this year, the Supreme Court arguing Counsel Association who had also made a depiction which sought for the installation of the statue.
The Madras High Court recapitulated its earlier decision on April 11 to not have photos, statues and portraits of any leader other than Mahatma Gandhi and Saint Thiruvalluvar in the courts and premises of the courts in Tamil Nadu.
Therefore, the Court had turned down requests made by the group of advocates to have portrait of Dr. Amedkar in the courts in State.
Register Council had issued a circular on July 7, this year, which said that the decision of full court was taken by keeping earlier resolutions passed in October, 2008 in mind, where the plea by a lawyers group to install the statue of Dr. Amedkar inside Court was rejected.
On July 25, the State government as the existing statues of Dr. Amedkar are concerned, the status quo would be maintained.
Dr. Amedkar belonged to Mahar Caste which was at that time an untouchable caste and as a result, he got struggled to gain even access of his primary education.
Eventually, he went on to hold total 26 degrees and titles and becoming one of the most highly educated Indians among his generation.
As a chairman of Drafting Committee, Dr. Amedkar was also called as the Father and the Architect of the Indian Constitution.
