In a significant development, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Ankit Tiwari, an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer arrested in December by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on bribery charges.

During a hearing on various petitions linked to Tiwari’s case, Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan directed Tiwari not to leave the State without official permission and to surrender his passport if required. Tiwari’s petitions contesting the rejection of his bail pleas by the Madras High Court were under consideration.

Additionally, the Court addressed the ED’s petition claiming non-cooperation from the Tamil Nadu government in sharing FIRs related to money laundering cases. The ED also sought the transfer of Tiwari’s bribery case from DVAC to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Tiwari was apprehended last year by the DVAC for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹20 lakh. The Supreme Court had earlier halted DVAC’s probe, suggesting the possibility of a judicial body overseeing cases involving both State and Central agencies.

Furthermore, the Court hinted at the need for guidelines to tackle biases in investigations by State and Central agencies. During the proceedings, it emerged that the ED had not filed a rejoinder in their case against the TN government, prompting a response from Additional Solicitor General SV Raju that it would be submitted. Tiwari was represented by advocate Shivam Singh during the proceedings before the apex court.
