BJP leader Sushil Modi, has spoken oppose the same sex marriage. In his sense, approval to same sex marriage would bring havoc in the society. the statement arouses, in the context, when four gay couples moved supreme court for the legal recognition of same-sex marriages in the society.
Most of the country started accepting LGBTQ members, including the Netherlands, south Africa, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and so on. Nearly 30 out of 195 countries have passed laws allowing gay
marriage, according to the pew research centre. Most of the developing countries has formally acceptance to same sex marriage and even granted with their rights and privileges in order to provide
equal rights in the society and give them a legal recognition.
In a nation-wide postal poll, 61.6% of Australian voters said they were in favour of same sex marriage, ensuring the federal government will try to pass a marriage equality bill before the end of
the year.
But there are many countries who still considered it as a heinous offence including Saudi Arab, Nigeria, Maldives, Singapore, Yemen, Sudan and a lot other more nations.
Problem faced by LGBTQ in India:
According to UNESCO report around 60% and 50% says that they were mostly victims of physical bullying when they were in middle/high school and higher secondary school. Bulling occurs in
educational institutions as there is little awareness, and even faculty members are homophobic.
Persons belonging to the LGBTQ community are scared to declare their true identity or it may lead to honour killings. This not only end here, they face discrimination while applying for the jobs, people
disgust behaviour towards them made them think of suicidal path.
According to Modi, “any law should also be attuned with traditions and cultures of the country. We should assess what is Indian society and whether the people are ready to accept it,”
He further enumerates by adding, “same sex relationships have been decriminalised…but shadi (marriage) is a pavitra sanstha (sacred institution). Same sex couples living together is one thing, but giving
them legal status is a different thing,” LGBTQ members were not given legal recognition since 90’s and till
date no government took the stand in order to provide rights and privileges in the society.
Modi further supported his statement by taking the reference of Muslim personal laws and others and said, “in India, same sex marriage is neither recognised nor accepted in any uncodified personal law like the Muslim personal laws or any codified statutory laws. Same sex marriages will cause complete havoc with the delicate balance of personal laws in the country.”
He also added, “I can’t debate with left and liberal people. This is my personal opinion.”
Conclusion :
Equality is one of the fundamental rights of all citizens then why there is a debate when it comes to LGBTQ members. Rights are available to all humans then why discrimination on the baes of sex,
gender. Homosexuals have been branded as abnormal in our society. People made other doubt on their birth, caste, sex, gender, race, etc.
