Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling, two international law firms, have revealed plans to merge and establish a distinct global law firm called Allen Overy Shearman Sterling (referred to as A&O Shearman)[1]. There are over 250 years of collective experience between Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling. The firm of A&O Shearman will have a total of 3,900 lawyers and 800 partners in 49 offices. In equal measure, A&O Shearman will be the only firm in the world with US law, English law and local law expertise.
According to an official statement, the merger was motivated by the clients’ demand for a unified global solution to assist them in navigating a progressively intricate legal, regulatory, and geopolitical landscape.
Adam Hakki, a senior partner at Shearman & Sterling said that for both companies this is a truly significant moment, which will deliver an unparalleled level of service to our clients. In addition, we are honored to be able to bring talented people on board a transformation transaction or an institution as significant as that of this year and looking forward to further recruitment in the coming years[2].
The merger is subject to normal closing conditions, which include the approval by each firm’s partners.
