The recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium is to grant nine more judges of the Calcutta  High Court a one-year tenure extension. The following additional judges’ names have been  recommended for term extensions by the Collegium, which is made up of Chief Justice DY  Chandrachud, Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai:

Those who have served as justices include Biswaroop Chowdhury, Partha Sarathi Sen, Prasenjit  Biswas, Uday Kumar, Ajay Kumar Gupta, Supratim Bhattacharya, Partha Sarathi Chatterjee,  Apurba Sinha Ray, and Md. Shabbar Rashidi.

The Collegium of the High Court in Calcutta unanimously recommended the Additional Judges  for appointment as permanent judges on April 29, 2024, according to the resolution adopted by the  SC Collegium. The West Bengal state governor and the chief minister, however, have not shared  their opinions on the aforementioned suggestion.

According to the statement, the Department of Justice forwarded the aforementioned  recommendation by citing Paragraph 14 of the Memorandum of Procedure, which states that the  Governor and the Chief Minister should be presumed to have nothing further to contribute to the  proposal and to proceed accordingly if the State’s constitutional authorities’ comments are not  received within the allotted time frame.

It further stated that Supreme Court judges familiar with the workings of the Calcutta High Court  had been engaged by the Collegium to determine if the Additional Judges were suitable to be  nominated as permanent judges. It was said that the rulings of the aforementioned Additional  Judges had been evaluated by a Committee of two Supreme Court judges appointed by the Chief  Justice of India pursuant to the resolution dated October 26, 2017 of the Supreme Court Collegium.

It further stated that the Collegium examined and assessed the documentation in order to determine  the worth and appropriateness of the Additional Judges for their appointment as permanent Judges.  As a result, after taking into account all relevant factors, the collegium issued an order designating  the previously mentioned Additional judges as additional judges for a new term of one year,  beginning on August 31, 2024.
