Even though there exists no specific guidelines or rules, but there has been a set mentality that only women should do all household chores. Now when they are going out and working in office as men , they are expected to manage both the task (indoor and outdoors) perfectly.
Recently Bombay High Court in its order made a significant statement about the same.
The facts of the case include that the couple got married in 2010 and had a child in 2013. But due to their differences they started living separately. Because wife refused to cohabit, husband filed for divorce. The family Court rejected his application as it found it a case of normal wear and tear in a relationship.
He filed a plea for the same in the High Court.
The grounds for divorce were the wife if always busy on her phone with her mother, due to which he has to go to work without any food in the morning. He also alleged her of abusing his parents.
A bench of Justices Nitin Sambre and Sharmila U Deshmukh dismissed the his plea as it did not found any cruelty done against the husband. It further observed that the mindset that a married women should do all household work is regressive. And it needs to be changed. Being married doesn’t mean that she is supposed to cut all her ties from her parents.
Since both spouses were employed and working, expecting only the women to do the housework is not correct. The bench further said that as the time has changed, so the mentality should also change and both husband and wife should equally bear the responsibilities of the house.
Inspite of the ongoing debates of women empowerment, women still continue to face inequality at home and also at work. So there’s a long way to go to achieve gender equality.
