On Sunday, 4th June, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Supreme Court of India by advocate Vishal Tiwari. The PIL seeks investigation and proper planning for the implementation of the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System called KAVACH by the Indian Railways. This will lead to improvement in the conditions of the Indian Railways further leading to reduced train crashes.

The PIL also mentions the setting up of an expert commission headed by a retired judge and technical members “to analyse and review about the current risks and safety parameters in the railway system and to suggest systematic safety modifications for strengthening railway safety mechanisms and submit its report in two months to this court. “

In the years of 2011-12, under the then Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) was developed. Later, after the BJP government came into power, the system was replaced with the KAVACH system. It is now being said that KAVACH has not yet been implemented resulting in the still poor condition of the Indian Railways.

The deadly and disastrous triple train accident took place on 2nd June in Balasore, Odisha. The death toll at present has risen to almost 300 now with approximately 900 being injured. The train crash is one of the most dangerous and most fatal train accidents in all of India’s history.
