On Wednesday, a Division Bench of Justices L. Victoria Gowri and R. Subramaniam of the Madurai Bench asked the Assistant Director of Geology and Mining Department for the status report of a petition that sought prohibition of sand mining near the Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.  

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by V. Muthukumar of the Virudhunagar district. He mentioned in the PIL that permission was granted only for the mining of soil, but illegal sand mining had also started to take place. Sand mining in the area can lead to harmful outcomes in the environment and the ecosystem.

The Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve in Virudhunagar, with an area comprising 1,01,657.13 hectares is India’s 51st and Tamil Nadu’s fifth Tiger Reserve.
