Pakistan an economically backward country has applied for the BRICS(Brazil, Russia, India China, and South Africa) membership, a group of five developing countries under the presidency of Russia in 2024. Russian news portal TASS reported that Pakistan has officially applied for membership in the BRICS expansion group. Pakistan expects the support of Russia in joining the BRICS says the Pakistani envoy to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali. Pakistan looking for the support of the member countries especially Russia for joining the group in 2024.
At present BRICS has only five members- Brazil, Russia, India China, and South Africa and six members- Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates will officially join the group from the 1st of January, 2024. But, Argentina’s new president has shown no interest in joining the group. Pakistan is expecting to join under the Presidency of Russia. China has given full support in favour of Pakistan’s bid for joining the bloc. India is in support of BRICS expansion but it didn’t comment on Pakistan yet.
Pakistan may get the support of Russia and become an official member of the BRICS expansion group. But, the group must think before admitting Pakistan as a member of the group. Pakistan is expecting low-interest loans only and its economy is suffering. Pakistan is also a terror-sponsoring country. Indian diplomats have to look very closely into this matter.
