BUDAPEST, December 1st (Reuters) – Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, suggested on Friday that the European Union should prioritize signing a strategic partnership agreement with Ukraine instead of initiating membership negotiations with the country. Orban’s proposal serves as a potential compromise ahead of an important EU summit. The leaders of the 27 EU member states are set to make a decision in mid-December regarding the European Commission’s recommendation to invite Kyiv to begin membership talks once it fulfills the necessary conditions, despite on-going conflict with Russia. Achieving unanimity among the bloc’s 27 members is crucial for any such decision, and Hungary is perceived as a key potential obstacle. Orban has consistently stated that Hungary cannot support the Commission’s current proposal. On Friday, he restated that certain matters must be resolved prior to commencing membership talks with Ukraine, as the country’s current situation makes it challenging to evaluate the implications of its membership for the EU.
The government of Israel hereby announces the resumption of combat operations against Hamas in Gaza. This action has been taken due to Hamas’s violations of the temporary truce agreement, including the firing of rockets at Israel and failure to fulfill their commitment to release all women held as hostages. The previously implemented seven-day pause, which commenced on November 24 and was extended twice, played a crucial role in facilitating the exchange of hostages and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Shortly before the truce was set to expire at 7 a.m., Israel reported intercepting a rocket launched from Gaza. As of now, there has been no statement or claim of responsibility from Hamas regarding this incident. It is vital to underscore that with the resumption of fighting, the Israeli government remains fully committed to achieving the objectives of this war, which include the liberation of our hostages, the neutralization of Hamas, and the assurance that Gaza will never pose a threat to the safety and well-being of Israeli residents.
Orbán, who is widely regarded as one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies in Europe, asserts that accession negotiations should not commence with a country engaged in a war, as Ukraine’s membership would lead to a reorientation of the European Union’s system for distributing funds among member countries.
Recently, Orbán stated that Ukraine is far from being eligible to join the bloc, further indicating that his government would pose a significant obstacle to Kyiv’s aspirations at the upcoming meeting of EU heads of state and government in Brussels.
Gulyas also declared on Thursday that Hungary would not endorse proposed changes to the EU’s budget, a portion of which aims to provide 50 billion euros ($54.5 billion) in long-term assistance to Kyiv.
He asserted that the EU is unlawfully withholding funds from Hungary and, therefore, the government will abstain from supporting any budget amendment. Orban’s proposition presents itself a mere day after European Union (EU) officials declared that Hungary was on the verge of reinstating access to EU funds amounting in billions of euros. These funds had previously been suspended due to concerns raised by Brussels regarding the impairment of democratic checks-and-balances within Hungary.
The Hungarian Prime Minister called upon a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and suggested that if the EU intended to offer additional financial aid to Ukraine, it should establish an autonomous monetary fund situated outside of the EU budget. This fund would be founded upon an intergovernmental agreement.
