A court in Srinagar on Thursday found two individuals guilty of assaulting a law student with acid in the Nowshera region in 2014. The Principal Sessions Judge in Srinagar, Jawad Ahmed, convicted Irshad Ahmad Wani, also known as Sunny, and Mohammad Umar Noor for offenses outlined in Sections 326-A, 120-B, and 201 of the Ranbir Penal Code. These offenses include causing grievous harm using acid, participating in criminal conspiracy, and tampering with evidence or providing false information to protect the offender. The Court stated that the prosecution successfully proved the charges against the accused with an overwhelming amount of evidence, leaving no reasonable doubt.

The judgment emphasized that considering the established facts, the consistent circumstances, and the connected chain of evidence, the most plausible conclusion is that accused No. 2, Mohammad Umar, committed the atrocious act of acid attack on the victim as part of the conspiracy planned by accused No. 1, Irshad Wani. Consequently, both accused individuals were found guilty by the Court. The case is scheduled for further proceedings on August 19, during which arguments will be presented regarding the extent of punishment for the two convicts.

The acid assault on the law student occurred on December 11, 2014, prompting law enforcement to file a criminal case at the Soura police station in Srinagar. During the investigation, it was revealed that Irshad had been stalking the victim for a considerable time and had previously proposed to her. However, when she rejected his proposal, he reportedly carried out the acid attack. Irshad collaborated with his friend, Mohammad Omar, to plan and execute the attack, according to police findings. The incident received widespread condemnation from various segments of society, leading local authorities to direct Deputy Commissioners to restrict the sale of acid following the incident.

Subsequently, on December 17, 2014, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court instructed the government to provide ₹3 lakh as compensation to the survivor of the acid attack.
