Hindu Right wing were doing some religious protests and attacked several areas or houses belonging to Muslims in Purola cause of being provoked by kidnapping of a 14 year old girl by two men-a Muslim and a Hindu. Their organization ‘Vishwa Hindu Parishad’ had warned them to vacate their place from some belts of Uttarakhand otherwise there would be consequences faced by them. Appeals were filed by citizens to stop the ‘mahapanchayat’ from taking place , petition was also filed by PUCL ( People’s Union for Civil Liberties ) before a vacation bench of Top Court although it directed them to approach Uttarakhand High Court.
Counsel highlighted plight of Muslim traders of the region and the social and economic boycott that was faced by them due to the rise in communal tension. They were even forced to shut their shops for which Alam appealed to open them. But Chief Justice reacted that there was no order passed by State or any authority for closing the shops and law-and-order situation follows in society , so everyone is free to have freedom over their life .
But to this, Alam explained that law-and-order situation is there but issue to follow it is due to the atmosphere of ‘fear and polarization’ . It was added then, ‘Stopping violence was one thing but normal lives are a must to get resumed.’
Court added to their first order that time is the best healer. Lives and property are required to get security and it should be ensured to not get any harm. Time should be given to such practices to cool down on the other hand and no force would be used by anyone to force anyone to buy or not buy from any particular shops. No shops would be closed .
Also, it was submitted by Adv.-General SN that Congregation of Hindutva outfits have been called off due to intervention of administration in order to diffuse the tension.
