• Iranian authorities have detained and expelled 21,407 Afghan migrants who entered Iran  illegally. These migrants were reportedly handed over to the Taliban’s representative in the  Dogharun district. The report further states that in the first half of 2023, over 328,000 Afghan  migrants have been deported from Iran. 

• This comes after reports of Afghan returnees, some with official residency permits, being  detained and deported. Concerns have been raised by Afghan refugees in Iran regarding the  increasing number of deportations, arrests, and police harassment the Taliban has urged  neighbouring countries not to deport Afghan refugees. 

• The Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, has urged Iran and Pakistan to show tolerance  towards migrants and refrain from deporting them by force or treating them illegally. The  deportation of Afghan refugees from Pakistan has intensified, and Iran has also started forced  deportations, causing anxiety among the refugees. 

• Enayatullah Alokozay, a member of the defenders of Afghan refugees in Iran, has confirmed  the forced deportation of Afghan refugees from Iran, which is progressing rapidly. The Iranian  government and the international community have faced criticism from refugee  representatives in Iran. Community for their lack of support and have called for action to  address the challenges faced by Afghan refugees. 

• Iranian authorities are deporting Afghan refugees, despite the challenges they face in finding  employment and housing, and obtaining identity documents. According to Spogmai  Jabbarkhil, an Afghan refugees’ representative in Iran, the Iranian government is particularly  harsh towards refugees, pushing them out ahead of winter.  

• Meanwhile, Pakistan’s interim government has also decided to forcefully deport Afghan  migrants, resulting in the deportation of over 220,000 individuals since November .
