The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday directed the district Joint Commission of Kanyakumari to submit details concerning the temple jewellery of the AdiKesava Perumal temple. The direction was issued based on a PIL petition filed by the Sree Adikesava Seva Trust.

The Adikesava Perumal is an approximately 2,000-year-old Hindu temple located in Thiruvatturu of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. It is also one of the 108 Divya Desams (Holy shrine spots) of Hinduism. In the year 1992, there occurred a theft of gold jewellery, precious stones and ornaments of the deity’s statue in the temple. The 23 people accused of this theft were jailed only in 2019.

The Sree Adikesava Seva Trust, in their PIL, have asked the authorities to place the golden Sivalingam, Panchola idols, old Kalasam and other ornaments of the Lord Adikesava on the temple premises for the public to worship. Their complaint was that the deity was not adorned with the jewellery.

Justices, R. Subramanyan, and L. Victoria Gowri, have now ordered the Executive Officer of Karnataka district to submit a list of all temple jewellery and other valuables ornaments that were there in the temple before the 1992 theft took place. The Court has now adjourned the case till June 19.
