On Thursday, 1st March, the High Court of Madras granted an interim relief to the well-known Tamil musician Harris Jayaraj in the case of entry text payment of ₹11.50 lakh on a car that he had imported years ago.
Harris Jayaraj is a renowned Musician hailing from Chennai. Apart from being predominant in the Tamil Music industry, he has also composed songs in Hindi and Telugu. In 2010, he bought an imported luxury car from Italy, the Maserati Granturismo Sport Coupe. While trying to register his car in the local Regional Transport Office (RTO), he was denied on account that the entry tax had not been paid. A writ petition was then filed by him which helped him obtain an interim order for registering the vehicle.
Although the case had been dismissed later in 2019, a state government notice had been sent to the musician demanding entry tax payment of ₹13.07 lakh. He then therefore moved to the high court of Madras which later ordered him to pay the entry tax with penalty.
Jayaraj had filed a petition seeking stay on the notice stating that he had already paid ₹11.50 lakh as entry tax in 2012. It was also mentioned that the judge ordered to pay only the entry tax while the government order mentions penalty too.
Justices R Mahadevan and Mohammef Shaffiq along with Counsel Vijayanan Subramanyam of the Madras High Court on Thursday’s hearing granted a stay in favour of the musician.
