Amit Katyal, a businessman allegedly connected to members of Lalu Yadav’s family, was placed under arrest in relation to a money laundering case involving the suspected land-for-jobs scheme.

Businessman Amit Katyal, who is reportedly a close friend of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Yadav and his son Tejashwi Yadav, was placed under judicial custody until December 5 by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court on Wednesday. The lands-for-jobs case is connected to an ongoing money-laundering probe, which is why Katyal was placed on detention.

Previously, till November 22, Amit Katyal was being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the purported financial irregularities. The anti-money laundering organisation had him arrested earlier this month.

In the land-for-jobs case against Lalu Yadav, there are claims that from 2004 to 2009, when he served as the Union Railway Minister, he and his family members transferred landed property into their names in exchange for being appointed as “substitutes” on Group D posts in different railway zones. This is how they allegedly received financial benefits.

Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, daughter Misa Bharti, and other individuals have been accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of participating in a criminal conspiracy to give railway positions to candidates in exchange for their selling or gifting them land at below-market prices.

Bhola Yadav, Lalu’s former Officer on Special Duty, was detained by the CBI in July 2023 in relation to the case. The CBI had submitted a chargesheet against 16 people by March 2023, including Lalu Prasad Yadav and his relatives.

In accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the ED also carried out raids and detained people connected to the investigation.

Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi, and other individuals were summoned by a Delhi court in February 2023, and as part of the ongoing investigation, the CBI questioned the two former chief ministers of Bihar in March 2023.

In October 2023, Tejashwi Yadav, Rabri Devi, and Lalu Yadav were granted bail by the Rouse Avenue court. Special CBI Judge Geetanjali Goel issued the bail orders after citing a

ruling by the Supreme Court that states an accused person need not be detained again at the request of the court if they were either arrested and released on bail or not arrested at all by the prosecution.
