The Court’s observations came on a judgment dismissing a plea moved by two persons seeking exemption from wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers.
The Kerala High Court has supported the installation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras on roads to detect traffic violations. In a recent case, the Court stated that allegations of corruption or lack of transparency should not discourage this innovative step. The Court acknowledged concerns about transparency in the decision-making process for purchasing cameras but emphasized that those issues should be dealt with separately. The Court recognized the benefits of AI cameras in detecting traffic violations and appreciated the Motor Vehicle department for introducing this innovative system. The project, called “Automated Traffic Enforcement System for Safe Kerala,” has received widespread acceptance, even from opposition parties in the state.
The Court’s remarks came in response to a plea by two individuals seeking exemption from wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers due to medical issues. The Court, after considering relevant laws and previous judgments, ruled that there could be no exemptions from wearing helmets as it is crucial for the protection of citizens’ lives. The Court highlighted that using public transportation was a viable option for the petitioners and dismissed their plea, noting that exemptions cannot be used to evade the AI cameras.
It’s worth mentioning that a separate division bench of the Court is currently examining a public interest litigation (PIL) petition alleging corruption and favoritism in the awarding of tenders for the installation of AI cameras. The division bench has directed the government to suspend payment of installments for the project until further examination.
