On Friday, an audit of a gaushala in Nagrota, Jammu was conducted by Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Puneet Gupta of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

This visit was prompted by a PIL filed before the Court highlighting the poor conditions of the gaushala.

On June 2nd, Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh audited the gaushala and assessed the condition of the Animals there. During the examination, Chief Justice Singh suggested execution of a system of open atmosphere for the cows in the gaushala. This visit was made after a PIL was filed by a NPO “SAVE” by Chairman of this NPO against the pathetic condition of Jammu’s gaushala. Senior Adv. Pursuant to that, the bench on May 31 passed an order stating that they will visit the gaushala on June 2, Friday. The court also ordered Commissioner of Jammu Municipal Corporation, Director of Animal Husbandry, J&K Chairman Gau Rakshak Samiti and Advocate General of J&K to attend the gaushala on the day of examination. The bench also visited the gaushala on Friday after court hours and gave suggestions to the officers.

In an interview with Bar & Bench, Advocate General D C Raina stated that the government is exploring ways to improve the conditions of gaushalas. Senior advocate Ahmed also spoke to Bar & Bench and mentioned that he has submitted guidelines and standard operating procedures from the Animal Welfare Board. He added that he has requested the Jammu Municipal Corporation to adopt similar procedures and guidelines for the effective maintenance of gaushalas.
