Justice Subhasis Talapatra was sworn in as the 33rd Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court on Tuesday, succeeding former Chief Justice Dr. S. Muralidhar upon his retirement. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Odisha’s Governor, Prof. Ganeshi Lal. The recommendation for Justice Talapatra’s elevation came from the Supreme Court Collegium in July of this year and received subsequent approval from the Central government.

Born on October 4, 1961, in Udaipur, Tripura, Justice Talapatra obtained his Arts and Law degrees from the University of Calcutta. He became a member of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh on September 12, 1990. He practiced law primarily at the Agartala Bench of the Gauhati High Court, specializing in constitutional, civil, and criminal cases. His designation as a Senior Advocate took place on December 21, 2004.

Taking on the role of an Additional Judge at the Gauhati High Court on November 15, 2011, he was later appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Tripura High Court on September 13, 2013. During his career, he served as Acting Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court twice, from November 2 to November 13, 2018, and again from November 11 to November 15, 2019. His transfer to the Orissa High Court occurred on June 1, 2022, and he officially assumed office on June 10, 2022.

However, his tenure as Chief Justice will be short-lived, as he is set to retire on October 3, 2023, giving him less than two months in the position.
