India hosted 2+2 foreign minister and defense minister meetings with the USA on Friday. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austine and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken came to India for the 2+2 dialogue. They discussed various issues like the Israel-Hamas war, people-to-people ties, defense partnerships, Indo-Pacific as well as emerging technologies. The USA diplomats said “ We want a free, open, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific in the region. This 2+2 dialogue was based on PM Modi’s visit in June, both sides agreed to cooperate on the co-production of high-powered engines for India’s new combat jet and supply of 31 MQ-9B Reaper drones.
S Jaishankar while discussing Indo-Pacific said that India is ready to host the next Quad submit next year. But, India’s invitation to Mr. Biden for the 26th January Republic Day parade and the Quad leaders’ summit is still awaited.
Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) is a group of four countries i.e., India, The USA, Japan, and Australia. It aims to discuss and cooperate in the Indo-Pacific region. Quad emerged with the sideline with ASEAN( South East Asian Association) in 2007. Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe was the first to put this idea forward. Australia had withdrawn from this forum due to political pressure from China. It resumed its cooperation in Quad after the military cooperation with The USA. In 2017, the first summit was held in Philippines for the cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. However, the Australian PM in-person recently went to China to resolve all the issues with China. It happened due to the engagement of the USA in the two wars, the Ukraine-Russia war and the Israel-Hamas war. Australia is the weakest country in the Quad so it is time for the other three countries to extend the Quad to Quad Plus and engage with other Southeast Asian countries.
China is the main concern for the Quad countries. Its navy became the world’s strongest navy. The US military intelligence says that China will attack Taiwan by 2027. The US needs the cooperation of all the Quad countries especially India, who can challenge the dominance of China. The US wants India to block the Malacca Strait because all the oil from the Middle East comes to China. By blocking the Malacca Strait, China’s Oil needs will be directly impacted. It will give time to the US to help Taiwan. But, this idea can’t be implemented without the cooperation of ASEAN and Southeast Asian countries. The extension of Quad Plus can save Taiwan from China’s Attack.
