
The Union government in a notification appointed five additional judges of Madras High Court as permanent judges. These are as follows :
1. Justice A A Nakkiran,
2 Justice Nidumolu Mala,
3. Justice S Sounthar,
4. Justice Sunder Mohan, and
5. Justice Kabali Kumaresh Babu.
The resolution for this appointment was passed on 31st August and the Chief Minister and the Governor assented.
They are appointed from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.
The collegium in its resolution said that a two-judge Supreme Court committee also assessed the judgements of respective judges.
The committee comprised of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna and was formed by the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.
There were speculations regarding this appointment since June 2023 when recommendations for the same were made.
The additional judge are usually appointed for the term of 2 years . Article 217 of the Indian constitution States that the judge of a High Court shall be appointed by the President in consultation with the CJI and Governor of the state whereas in the case of judge other than Chief Justice, the chief Justice of High Court is also consulted.
