The Madras High Court has dismissed a first information report (FIR) filed against researcher Lois Sofia, who was accused of chanting anti-BJP statements while traveling in 2018.
On Wednesday, Justice P Dhanapal of the Madurai bench issued the judgment halting all actions taken against Sofia in the 2018 case.
Although the Court’s full ruling has not yet been made public, Sofia’s attorney D Geetha stated that the Court determined that chanting slogans was not a criminal violation.
When Sofia, a Canadian research scholar, yelled “fascist BJP government down, down” in front of Tamilisai Soundararajan, the current governor of Telangana and a former president of the Tamil Nadu BJP, on a flight to Thoothukudi in September 2018, she was arrested.
After the sloganeering, Sofia and Soundararajan got into a verbal altercation in the airport, and Soundararajan later filed a complaint against Sofia.
Sofia was charged with making comments that caused a public disturbance and mischief under Sections 505 and 290 of the IPC. Sofia had been granted bail by a Thoothukudi Court after being arrested.
After Sofia’s FIR was filed, her father filed a complaint with Pudukkottai police stating that Soundararajan and her supporters had threatened, harassed, and assaulted his daughter at the airport. Additionally, he went to the local judicial magistrate, stating that no FIR had been filed by the police. The magistrate then gave the police the go-ahead to handle the allegation.
