As a response to the attack by Hamas on Israel, the European Union is of the opinion that it would urgently review any development aid given to the Palestinian Authorities in order to ensure that no funds would be misused. It was reviewing all of the 691 million euros i.e., $728 million in development money provided to Palestinians. The European Union (EU) had earlier announced that it was “immediately” suspending the financial aid. Every project would undergo review. And the European nations bloc made no attempt to explain the turnabout.

All upcoming budget requests have been put on hold and postponed until a later date.

The European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic released a retraction regarding the verdict thereafter receiving condemnation from a number of European politicians.

The suspension was first announced by the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi on X previously known as Twitter.

Many leaders of EU including the acting Deputy Prime Minister of Spain Yolanda Diaz, expressed her disapproval of the suspension on X, calling it an outrageous decision and a betrayal of Europe’s founding ideals. She further stated that the European Commission must make amends and take the lead in European efforts to promote peace instead of punishing an entire population.

Varhelyi’s initial declaration was criticized by a member of the European Parliament Evin Incir, who believes punishing the civilians of Palestinians for Hamas’ attack will only serve to escalate the conflict.
